My Style: The Shirtdress

The shirtdress, inspired by the men’s button-down dress shirt, first appeared on the scene in the 1950s. Coming in all cuts, fabrics and detailing, the style is one of my favorite shapes to wear in the fall–it sort of has a “back to school” feel!  After adding a statement head wrap to this look, I decided to wear it unbelted to avoid accessory overkill. Plus, my initial attraction to this garment was caused by its androgynous shapelessness.

Because a shirtdress in itself is somewhat masculine, I juxtaposed the look with a pair of feminine, heeled booties in a beautiful chestnut color. Chestnut-colored anything reminds me of crunchy autumn leaves.

The head wrap has an English Riding print–I love the rich tomato-red color. As I mentioned, it played a dominant role in this look, so I kept other details to a minimum–my only jewelry being my wedding ring and small gold bar necklace.

Bella wanted to be in some photos, too. She does much better as a country dog, and I think she’s finally getting used to having a little brother.

It’s already starting to feel like fall. I can’t get enough of the cooler air and fabulous fashions.
